Start With 72 Hours, Not a Bunker

Start With 72 Hours — Home, Heart & Harbor article cover

If preparedness feels expensive or overwhelming, shrink the target. Build a household that can function for roughly 72 hours without depending on a perfect outside response.

Cover the basics first

Think drinking water, food your household will actually eat, necessary medications and hygiene items, flashlights, backup charging, basic first aid, weather information, and a simple communication plan.

Build around your household

A useful kit for one person is different from a useful plan for a family with children, pets, mobility needs, or refrigerated medications. Preparedness works best when it is personal rather than copied from a generic checklist.

Make it boring on purpose

The best preparedness supplies are often ordinary things that are stored well, checked periodically, and easy to use. The goal is not to own impressive gear. The goal is to make a difficult three days more manageable.

Once those first 72 hours are covered, you have a foundation you can strengthen without panic buying.
